Members tdr
Thread title says it all. When do you know it's time for new ones? I am not talking about obviously broken tubes. Just when do you put new ones in. My amp sounds always a little distant. Could that be a sign for old worn out tubes? Pre or power amp?

Members Mavesicles
Pre amp tubes should be changed when one of the following occurs; the amp loses "sparkle" and / or drive, there is a noticeable drop in gain before output distortion, there is an increase in hiss, you hear crackles and pops, or there is no output, but you can still hear hiss through the speakers. Members thefyn
Also shrill feedback at moderate gain levels is a giveaway. But never change them. Seriously. You will know when they are bad.
Members Lorax
Preamp tubes can last a long time. Seldom go slowly bad - they are almost black & white - either good or toast....At the same time, changing them for different sounds is fun and educational...!!:poke:
