Buying online cuts out a LOAD of fee's that shops have to pay, rent, a lot of administration fee's in running the shop, a lot of staff etc. Cutting out a lot of these is what makes online vendors a lot cheaper. In fact, once I got an advertising flyer from a local music store showing the microKorg synth for $299 (everywhere else it was $399). When I went to the store they said it was a mistake, apologized profusely, but wouldn't sell it for less than $399. So I took the flyer to GC and asked them if they would match the $299 price (which they didn't know was a mistake). After much back and forth between sales people and various managers, they went for it, and I got it for $299.
