Members pissdrunx Posted February 11, 2009 Members Share Posted February 11, 2009 so, I started using the low input channel on my amp and noticed, that it hums until I almost dime the preamp, and the other day it was making silly noises like loosing gain, and had this raunchy sound. I have had this amp for about 3 years and I havent touched the preamp tubes yet, and I don`t know how long they have been in there altogether. So I`m thinking that these tube may be dying on me. So which tubes should I stick in there? I`m guesing that I should put balanced tubes in V1 an V3, and i think I`m going with JJ because theyre supposed to have a tad darker sound. The type of tubes is what I don`t know what to use. I want a bit less gain and a bit more vintage-ey sound, think Jimi Hendrix on steroids. I appreciate any advice. Members .homewrecker. Posted February 11, 2009 Members Share Posted February 11, 2009 You only need a balanced one for V3, and even that isn't a necessity. I have an old Slyvania and 2 random 9th gen Chinese in my 2203, If you can afford it go NOS for at least V1 and my recommendation is to stay away from JJ and EHX 12ax7s, I didn't like them at all in my 2203.
