In some amps that use indirectly heater valve rectifiers a stand-by switch can actual damage them. The AC30CC is one example.

Cathode stripping generally only occurs in large transmitter valves (guitar amps use receiver valves) where plate voltage of 1kV+ is common.
Guitar amps generally have plate voltages of 500Vdc or less, though there are a few exeptions.
