I've tried several different types of tubes in my SD18 and ultimately came back to what Jeff Bober (the designer) recommended in the first place: V1: Sovtek 12AX7B (http://www.tubedepot.com/so-12ax7wb.html)V2: Sovtek 12AX7A (http://www.tubedepot.com/so-12ax7wa.html) V3: Sovtek 12AX7A (http://www.tubedepot.com/so-12ax7wa.html)PWR: Sovtek EL84 (http://www.tubedepot.com/so-el84.html)Rect: Electro Harmonix 5U4 (http://www.tubedepot.com/eh-5u4gb.html) Jeff designed the amp around cheaper new production tubes (specifically these sovteks) and I think it sounds great with them. Thanks, that's exactly the info I was looking for. Should I replace all the tubes. I haven't really played since 2004 and the amp should be about 10 years old. Should I get the tubes tested? It's not like they go bad just sitting there, but unless you know how worn they are, I'd just replace all of them (Especially since those sovteks are fairly inexpensive). You could leave the rectifier tube in there if you wanted to but if it were me, I'd just replace them all and keep the old ones for backup. Members n0fx
You probably already know this...but incase you didn't...just because the ampsits unused (even for years) doesn't mean it needs new tubes. If they were old/used to begin with then swap them for sure. Members codek
Power tubes for sure. Keep a couple extra sets of EL84's on hand. How much longer do I have with my pre's then? For example does power tubes burn at 1.5x as much as pre's?

Power Tubes are gonna need replacement much more frequently than the pre's. Some preamp tunes may never need to be changed if the amp isnt played daily. You'll know when the pre tubes need changing...extra noise, microphonics/excessive feedback, crackles, etc... Power tubes should last around a year of moderate playing...if you play daily for a few hours at pretty good volume that Budda will eat em quick. Maybe 5-7 months...
