Members fistacuffs
I heard its the 7 string version of the 85. any truth to this?
Members Jesse G
I'm pretty sure I called EMG once and asked and that's what they said. You can ask for the EMG 81-7 if you prefer the flavor of the 81.
Members Shask
Neither really. They say it is closest to the 85. I have both though, and there are similarities, but they are different.
Members Curtis.Fagan
I've always thought they sounded like the 85, mostly for the added thickness on the lower tuned strings... Whatever works man, YMMV... -Curtis

Whatever works man, YMMV... -Curtis It does, I would say 80%. When I go back and forth, I definitely notice difference in the low end and/or lower mids. The high end is a bit different as well. But, its not as drastic as going to the 81 or something...
Members Chrisjd
It more closely resembles the 85. Dino Cazares designed it alongside EMG. He wanted the meatier tone of the 85 but with the attack of the 81. I still much prefer the 81-7.

You get a sharper attack and it seems like more clarity ( I guess that's what you call it) when compared to the

I would advise to leave some space actually. Personally, I think it sounds awful with the pickups so close to the strings.

Members Chrisjd
No, they don't have to be it is more of a preference thing right, and I actually prefer mine a little further away from the strings, gives me more control over my sound/tone. Members peavey_impact
I haven't spent much time with the 707 but I seem to recall it being more mild in output compared to the 85. I didn't dig the 707 and I love the
Members FalseRevRG
EMG recommends having them as close as possible to the strings, but I disagree entirely. I find that it sounds much better backed off a bit.
