Getting a volume boost from multi fx units

I've been using a clean boost in my amps fx loop to get a good volume boost for solo's but i want to switch to a multi fx unit in conjunction with my amp head using the 4 cable method. I wont be using any built in preamps or amp/cab sims. So say if i was to use a PODX3 Pro, or digitech GSP1101 and set a certain patch level higher than all the others will it actually make my sound as a whole louder, or will it have minimal effects since i wont be using any built in preamps?

As long as where you're boosting comes before your amp's preamp, you should get a volume boost. The unit's master patch volume should I imagine come basically at the end of the chain, so that should work. Otherwise, EQs or whatever should work, as long as they're placed after the "loop" function of the FX unit.
