sorta OT - why can't I do this on a guitar

as part of my singing practice routine I work on pitch training by hitting random notes on a keyboard and matching those notes with my voice.

My frustration is, after 20 years playing I can't do the same thing with my guitar. That is, if some one hits a random note on something, why can't i find that same note on my guitar as quickly and easily as I do with my voice? Of course I can eventually find it but singing I can hit the note almost instantly and I can't come close to that on the guitar.

Are you all able to do that with your guitars?

More importantly, you always sing by matching your voice to a reference tone in your head, whereas with instruments, you need to compute how to make the instrument make that sound, with far less direct feedback. There's at least an extra layer of perception/interpretation going on. Even if I can't sing on pitch, I can still sort of hum the progression of a melody, it would take a lot longer to suss out the same line on guitar.
