Members nerol1st
Erm I have never used/heard of this before. I can solder I have already modded my VJ and wired a guitar from scratch, but desoldering was never needed. How does it work? Does the braid just soke up the solder your removing? Thanks. Members Ryan_F
You press the braid against the solder joint with the soldering iron. Once it heats up with the solder, it absorbs the solder. Once it absorbs the solder, you cant reuse the braid, so you just cut that part of the desolder braid.
Members cloudscapes
exactly, just "soaks it up". personally I prefer using a pump
Members Ryan_F
Pumps are easier and more effective by all means. If you can find a heated pump that melts the solder itself, those are the cats pajamas. A quick touch and a press of a button and the solder is melted and sucked away. Members datstrat
Braids work well for smaller work such as surface mount pads and IC leads. But for larger work like as pots, switches and pickups the pump is the way to go. Radio Shack has them for not too many $.
Members tms13pin
I hate those spring loaded pumps, and the braid. I use the little red squeeze balls with the teflon tips, definitely my fave for years. RadioShack has those too. I've converted many folks at the Uni where I teach to these! --Tom
Members Liberty Belle
Braids are good but you do risk over heating things, like the trace on PCB's.A pump can cost about $10,i recommend a pump. If you use braid you will be buying it all the time,it don't last long.
Members RupertB
On the "teardown & rebuild" jobs I've done, I used both. Usually the pump works fine but occasionally there is a tight spot or a lead that is wrapped tightly, so that even a tiny bit of solder can make it stick. The braid is good for mopping up the excess solder in those cases. Pump first, then braid if necessary.
Members TweedBassman
tip: watch out for braid touching things you don't want to de-solder. it transfers heat very quickly and if it's laying down on something you can fry stuff.
