Members gnr2391
Hey guys, So when it comes to distortion, what is more important, the amp or guitar and how much can the pedals help? That's about it lol. Thanks a lot though.
Members drucifer
All of it really. Pickups, guitar wood, strings, pedals, amp, tubes, cabinet, speakers.
Members vic
yep pretty much it all but id say mostly dependant on the amp
Members pamackie
Amp, the guitar's tonewoods, & pickups mostly determine the character of your distortion. Pedals will not give you a distortion tone you're happy with if you don't have all these things in order.
Members Filter500
All of it. The amp will make or break it, though.

I'd say in order of importance, though: AmpSpeakerspickupspedalscabinettubesguitar constructionstrings ...some of these are totally an opinion thing but top 3 definitely belong where they are. Members OceansBetweenUs
Amp. Nothing else will *break* your sound. But if you have a crap amp, it will never sound good. Everything else just adds flavor but your amp is the base.
Members Mike Riley
You then Amp then Guitar I have seen some guys that can play through anything and soung great but I bet somewhere they played through something good that inspired them to keep practicing
Members flyingrhoads
Playing style also plays a big role in it. I can make even low-gain tones sound heavy where several of my friends can play through the same setup and not sound near the same tonewise simply because their playing style is different than mine. But to answer your question I think the specs of the guitar influence it more than the amp does to an extent.
Members gnr2391
I guess my issue is that when I hear something awesome, in a tone. I don't know what part of the whole setup to attribute it to, and if something is a little weak, I don't know what I would need to fix. Any input. Thanks!
