Members scottso
I myself like the old solder sucker. If you have a good one (not the $6 jobby from radio shack) they are amazing. A lot of people like desoldering braid but I can never get it work well. If you are having a hard time getting solder out of a hole, a trick is to heat the solder and stick a tooth pick in it. Pops it right open usually.
Members datstrat
For most through-hole pcbs I find day in and day out a hand held vacuum pump desolderer such as the Edsyn Soldapullt works best. Basically, you just reflow the existing solder (usually by adding some fresh solder or flux) and activate the pump to suck the solder from the PCB. It is not terribly hard, however, there certainly is a technique to doing this right. You may want to practice on some junk PCB prior to trying to service something valuable. If you are working on surface mount, a soldering iron along with a small heat gun and a good set of tweasers will usually do the trick. Having some desoldering braid can also be useful for cleaning up SMT pads.
