"Dialing in" is useless at home since it sounds completely different in the mix, and having a Mrak V, I end up just sitting there compulsively flipping switches and turning knobs to "experiment" for hours when I should be practicing. I like to break out the cheap gear that's kind of toneless when a bad guy breaks into the house, points a gun at me, and screams play me something. I kind of want him to not stick around long so I break out the little Behringer amp and the Squier Strat and I start jamming like I mean it. But I don't even tune up or anything.
