Also get a good pair of monitor headphones like AKG k240 : http://www.amazon.com/AKG-Acoustics-K240-Monitoring-Headphones/dp/B0002H0DGW You could get an older pair of Tannoy active monitors like the reveals or something for pretty cheap. Just make sure you check your mixes on everything. The car, the boom box, the Ipod, laptop speakers and anything else you have. IT MUST SOUND GOOD EVERYWHERE.
