Members The_J-Train
SO I'm sourcing my parts for a Hiwatt Custom 100 head, aka a DR103, and I've run into a problem with one of the can caps. The layout and schematic call for a double can with values of 16uF and 32uF, but I can only find 16uFx16uF and 32uFx32uF, not both in one. I know these exist somewhere based off internal pics of real DR103s with the correct value can. Below are links to a DR103 layout and a preamp schematic showing the can in question. I'm wondering if perhaps I could use one 32uF can and a separate 16uF can? Let me know what you think or if you know where to get a can cap like this. Layout cap is located on the far left, below the 4 input jacks Schematic cap is located in the upper left, you'll see it.
Members El-Lardo
I think Ted Weber will make you a custom cap. I'd just use a 32x32 and call it good.

Members jensk
Hi,I've been wanting to clone one of these myself. You wouldn't by any chance have some more schematics to share? Seen this alternate biasing circuit by the way?

Members The_J-Train
Nice link, thanx for posting that Absolutely:thu: There is one thing maybe you can help me with, though. I've been scouring the internet trying to find an effects loop circuit for a hiwatt, to no avail. London Power (The people that make power scaling and have those "The Ultimate Tone" books) has a universal circuit called The Best All-Tube Effects Loop which utilizes both halves of a dual triode 12a_7 tube and has adjustable send and return, etc. Seems pretty nice but I thought I'd ask you if you know of something better to throw in my DR103. Hey if you know the parts needed and the schematic... could you let me know :poke: I've been wanting to add and effects loop to my Gilmore Jr, but I'm not paying $100+ for a tube and a handful of components. Also I dont have the funds to shell out for TUT book. Thanks if you know it
Members egelmett
I'm wondering if perhaps I could use one 32uF can and a separate 16uF can? As long as the capacitance and voltage are met, you should be able to use two separate electrolytic caps in place of the canister. I'm not sure what the canister offers other than convenience, and if someone can speak up whether or not the canister is manditory other than for authenticity's sake, I'd like to know. But, as long as you have the right electro caps, you should be good. All it is is two separate electrolytic capacitors tied together with a common ground within the same container. Many filter caps from old amps are a paper canister version and they often need replacement. My Skylark was just as happy to have three separate MODERN electo caps instead of one paper canister. Members Casey4s
I did have several FX loop schematics (or the links) someplace but I have been looking for an hour and can't seem to find what I did with them. I will continue to look and if I find them I'll post them for you.

If you happen to know if anyone of those are particularly transparent that would be nice, as I definitely do not want to rob much, if any, of the Hiwatt tone. Ah sorry, when I tried them on the other thread they worked, but I guess I forgot copy and paste doesnt do it right While guitat>effects>amp is the way most people go with the hiwatt 50watt and 100watt old heads, there are some effects pedals that do so much better in an effects loop. Plus if the guy wants to use racks or something. If you want a vintage, scratch the effects loops. If you want to be inovative and [maybe] improve an a design, more power to ya. Members Tripower455
I am building my second Hiwatt clone (I also own a real DR504) and would like to add an effects loop too....... Any more info on this? It appears from those schematics posted that you could use the unused half of V2 to drive it. My current build is going to use the "Jimmy Page" preamp, mated to a 50 watt power section, but using 4 JJ 6V6s instead of of 2 EL34s, and it will have a half power switch. It is going into a Swanson 2-12 combo cab...... I'd love to get the reverb, chorus and delay into the loop.... Oh, and a 32/32 preamp cap can works perfectly. I used one on my first clone, and replaced the 16/32 in my Hylight with a 32/32 as well. No difference whatsoever that I could notice....... Members ZachBMTH
I'm a little behind haha, but by cloning, do you mean buying all those parts seperately and just creating an amp using a hiwatt amp schematic? or are you taking parts from one hiwatt amp and moding it?
Members Tripower455
Cloning an amp generally means that you source all new parts that are as close as possible to the original, and build it to the schematic. I try not to mess with success too much. My JP/6V6 setup I am putting together now is the farthest I've gone, and it's not too far removed from the originals.... I got the idea from Mark Huss (who's AWESOME Hiwatt site is referenced above) when we were discussing using the JJ 6V6s in an unmodded Hiwatt. I've been running these tubes in my real Hylight for about a year now. They sound great and the volume is a bit more manageable. 4 of them will work perfectly with the 50 watt iron, and defeating the cathode on 2 of them effectively halves the wattage. Here is the one I built last summer...... I've been gigging it with my classic rock cover band since October..... It is built on an Allynmey chassis, Heyboer "Partridge" clones, Sozo coupling caps, homemade turret board. All parts sourced by me from various places.... Both cabs were built by Jeff Swanson.... He is currently hard at work on my 2-12 Hylight cab as I type this! Great guy and beautifully built cabs..... The speaker cab is a 2-12 with Weber ceramic Thames...... My '78 2 holer sitting on top of the clone...... They both sound awesome! On the new build, I already had the chassis and boards, so I ordered a kit, minus these things from Vintage Hiwatt Restorations. It was cheaper in the long run, and a TON easier than making a bunch of orders to different places for the parts, and almost every part is exactly what I would've used. I needed a few different component values for the JP preamp, and that was taken care of with one small order from Metro...... Great stuff....... I'll get some pics of the new build soon. I've got the chassis partially assembled, and the preamp board about 3/4 populated...... Once the board is done, I'll run the heater wiring and then the fun begins.......
