My wife was about $250,000 in debt after her bout with cancer and as long as we sent them something, they quit calling. One place that we owed $75,000 settled for $2000... If you guys can work out a way for her to come up with some cash, you can work out settlement deals...$7800 ain't {censored}!!! Yeah, if you show the willingness to try to pay there really isn't anything they can do. Send them something every month and they will probably back off. If you just ignore the bill and don't show any effort to pay anything is when they will hound you to day and night forever. Like others have said also, try to negotiate with the hospital on the amount of the bill. They will probably come way off the $7800 if they think you are at least willing to pay what you can. That said, most bill collectors do adopt a real dickhead way of going about their jobs. I used to work in medical collections as a bad debt collector. Our company would offer payment plans and $50 on a bill that high would be acceptable and as long as the payor consistently paid we'd keep the plan going for a few years, and waive interest. Even when it reaches bad debt many hospitals might be willing to consider a charity write off, especially toward the end of the year when they assess how many thousands of dollars they need to create a big enough write off. It doesn't seem like this agency is "customer service" oriented though and they might need to be reported for harassment and you are likely to get better results dealing with the hospital's business office. You seem highly reasonable Pepi, talk to the business office manager. Explain that their contracted agency is highly unethical and interfering with the hospital's ability to recover the AR, and make the same offer with the intention of paying larger lump sums along the way. How is that allowed? so before that, you're paying them every month for medical insurance but the day you ACTUALLY NEED IT, they peace out?
