Members Belva
For my next build I'd like to do translucent blue under tung oil. This most likely means an oil based dye to ensure compatability. Anyone out there done this? Can you steer me to a purveyor of oil based blue dye? I know I'll have to do a scrap to see what works, but I'd like to avoid buying 2232 different dyes before I find one that works as I'm a cheap b@$t@%d. Thanks in advance
Members AluminumNeck
Analine Wood Dyes and they are alchol based. They look great when properly done and most every finish known to man is compatiable with them becuase the solvent base evoporates right off. Members MahaloVision
I've used TransTints from Target Coatings (also sold as ColorTone at StewMac) with decent success. However, I should have read through their instructions because they have specific guidance on how to use them with oils. In my case, I was using Formby's "Tung Oil" instead of real Tung Oil, with the dye mixed directly into a small batch of the Formby stuff. It turned out OK, but not as deep a red as I was originally going for. The good news is that it didn't turn out blotchy at all. Here's a link to that project: The Cheesy Bass
