Powering 2 boxes with 1 wall wart

This should be a breeze for the Wizards here at DIY..

I want to power two pedals with 1 'wall wart.' One of the pedals is 9v and the other is 12v. Possible? How big a wall wart would one need?

Not advisable?

Not advisable.

Two different voltage levels needed would mean one would have to operate at higher than it was designed for, or one at lower than designed for. Both could lead to bad things. Plus the wall wart would need to have a high enough power capacity to run both units at peak. Not likely to find something off the shelf at radio shack, but it is possible to design and build a power supply to do it with multiple voltage levels even.

It should be possible to make some kind of thing... Uhm. Some sort of an A/B voltagebox, where the inputvoltage is 12VDC, one output is 12VDC and the other 9VDC. A trimpot should do the trick? It would be like the Beavis DeVolt, but with a trimpot to avoid changes by mistake...

Not that simple. You would need to build a voltage devider. Then you have the problem where Most 9v pedals require 2~300ma. That would put an extra load on the 12V supply and either starve the 12V pedal or blow its supply. Also you issues where many 9v pedals require a zero hum source. Many 12v power adaptors arent.

Just not that easy. He could build a dual supply, but it would wind up taking up more space. He could just as easily stick the two wall warts in a box and call it a dual supply and for less money too since he has both wall warts already.

My advice is, it works right like it is, leave it alone.
