Members dattebayo1 Posted December 2, 2007 Members Posted December 2, 2007 I've been playing a Gitane DG-255 for about a year now and i love the sound these guitars put out, But i want to upgrade to something of better quality. It's hard to beat since the Gitane is so true to the origional designs from the 30's, but are there any other brands that really compete with these guitars?? Also, I prefer the sound from the oval sound-hole version that Selmer designed as opposed to origional D-shaped Maccaferi guitars. Any words of advice'd be greatly appreciated :]
Members lauren Posted December 2, 2007 Members Posted December 2, 2007 Check out these sites: http://www.gypsy-guitars.com/modules.php?ModPath=galerie&ModStart=gal&op=gal&galid=28 http://www.ger-gipsy-jazz-guitars.nl/ I thinkthis might give you some options.Sadly do not have one myself, maybe Santa will help out this year;)Attached is the one i want!!!
Members dattebayo1 Posted December 2, 2007 Author Members Posted December 2, 2007 I love Tchavolo Schmitt & Fapy Lafertin's playing, so it's super cool seeing them trying some of these out!! I'll look into the Boonstra guitars. thanks very much for the links :]
Members Pascal Posted December 2, 2007 Members Posted December 2, 2007 If you want to upgrade from your Gitane, you'll probably have to go into luthier territory... Boonstra is one option, but there are tens of others. The problem is usually to manage to see one in person... and it's particularly true when you live in the UK. If you want to try a Boonstra, you'll have to fly to Amsterdam and visit Palm guitars. You could also visit Ger Boonstra if you want to meet him in person. Another destination would be Paris and the surrounding area. There are countless French luthiers building Selmer-style guitars now, and you should be able to sample quite a few of them. One of the must-go shops, north of Paris being Guitar Village. See their (used guitars here, and for new guitars, see the individual luthiers here: Marin, Pascal, Lebreton, Mazaud, Alves De Puga (cheaper than most, and great quality), Pourtoy, Caillot, ALD, Mateos, and, further down, Dupont and Hot Club. Other interesting French luthiers, on the cheap side, include Fontaine and Patenotte, both in Mirrecourt. I hear that Fontaine's current luthier in particular has been in top form lately, and his guitars already have Django's soul in them. Fontaine and Patenotte guitars usually are on the rough side, tough to play and with less than great finish, but they have THAT sound. If you don't feel like flying for a guitar, you should be able to order directly from Palm or Guitare-Village (or quite a few other in the EU or the US -rf Charles, Casa Benelly, Elderly...-) or you could also pay a visit to English luthier John LeVoi, one of the oldest in the business.
Members Pascal Posted December 2, 2007 Members Posted December 2, 2007 Sadly do not have one myself, maybe Santa will help out this year;) Attached is the one i want!!! What is it?
Members Pascal Posted December 2, 2007 Members Posted December 2, 2007 BTW, if you decide to go the Boonstra/Palm guitars route..... please don't buy this one: It would be a mistake. It's destined to be mine. One day....

Members Pascal Posted December 2, 2007 Members Posted December 2, 2007 MCC Classique Nylon You, sir, are obsessed. Get one NOW!
Members Stackabones Posted December 2, 2007 Members Posted December 2, 2007 You, sir, are obsessed. Get one NOW! I know, I know. Such an obsession. It's hard enough just finding GJ boxes, but finding GJ-nylon boxes is really impossible. What store would carry one, let alone two or three models? Another one is a Manouche Modele Concert and Eimers makes one called the "Finesse." There are no budget nylon GJ gits. One day I'll just have to sell everything and roll some pennies.
Members Pascal Posted December 2, 2007 Members Posted December 2, 2007 BTW, dattebayo1, if you can read some French: http://www.manoucheries.com/list_ann.php?idcat=1&categorie=instruments&num_ann=134 (used guitars for sale) And another good address, in Germany this time: gypsyguitar.de

Members DarkHorseJ27 Posted December 13, 2007 Members Posted December 13, 2007 I'm aware that Cordoba started making an acoustic that is based after some Selmers. Can't really say how good they are, I've never tried them. http://www.cordobaguitars.com/productcat.aspx?c=6
Members EvilTwin Posted December 13, 2007 Members Posted December 13, 2007 I'm aware that Cordoba started making an acoustic that is based after some Selmers. Can't really say how good they are, I've never tried them.http://www.cordobaguitars.com/productcat.aspx?c=6 I own one, but they are of comparable quality to Saga's Gitane line (which is to say they're pretty darn good). Le Voi is conveniently located in the UK, dattebayo, so he may be a good bet. Dupont is right over in France.http://www.acoustic-guitars.com/guitares-jazz-manouche.php Dell'Arte gj boxes are very popular, but may be harder to get in the UK. If the price of shipping is no concern, check out the used market: http://www.gypsyguitars.com/inventory.php You can also check out Saga's higher end Gitanes, like John Jorgenson's signature models.

I've heard things... O, so, SO curious! I should be ordering a gitane 255 anyday now myself. Wish I had the money for a dupont, but I'm gonna settle for that for now. Unless someone has a few grand they feel like giving away?

Members Pascal Posted December 13, 2007 Members Posted December 13, 2007 Well, don't hold your breath, but... I was told they're working on some prototypes (not mentionned on their website): a Dorado Schmitt model, and a nylon string (no link ). So one day, maybe... *crosses fingers*
Members Pascal Posted December 13, 2007 Members Posted December 13, 2007 Le Voi is conveniently located in the UK, dattebayo, so he may be a good bet. He's also only a few miles away from me. Anybody who plans to visit him, drop me a line, we could meet up.
