Members streetknight
Saw what appeared to be a pretty old Gibson acoustic today. It had a pickup right where the neck met the body and had a volume and tone knob. Had J-160E in the sound hole. Very nice sounding instrument. I think they're asking $1500.00 for it. Does this sound about right and are they worth it? Thanks
Members Fred Fartboski
Depending on what year it was made in it may have either a solid or laminated top. The laminate top helps eliminate feedback and is good if you're primarily going to be playing it live and amplified. The one I have is a recent(2002) solid top. I play it mostly unplugged and enjoy it as a really nice Gibson acoustic. $1500(with a case) is a good price for a recent used one. The older ones begin to have vintage and collector appeal which you will pay a premium for.
Members Fred Fartboski
You should also know that the current "John Lennon" J160E's have laminated tops as they were built to the 1962 specs of the J160E's the Beatles played.
Members streetknight
This one said something about being proudly Union built. The guy at the store said the best they could date it was sometime in the 60's.
Members Fred Fartboski
Here's a little more info on the J160E:http://vintage-guitars.blogspot.com/2006/05/gibson-j-160e.html I don't know anything about the "Proudly Union Built". Is that on the sticker inside the guitar? Maybe someone else here with a 1960's Gibson acoustic knows.
Members guitarcapo
John is strumming it here. His version had a plywood top. I always thought it sounded a little thin but I guess that's part of the Beatles sound. It compliments George's Ramirez classical nicely that way.
