Amazing recording done entirely on Taylor GS Mini

Here's what I'd like to know. There is a synth string sound going on in the background. He mentions he uses a Line6 M13 effects pedal, which does have a strings patch. I've never used a pedal... how did he get the strings sound? I mean, do you play chords or and it recognizes it or what? Do you strum a chord and it holds it until you play or another, how does this work?
