what is the difference...

Active pups require a battery to operate them. Most basses with active electronics have passive pups and a battery powered preamp with bass, treble and sometimes midrange controls. Active pups do not have active tone controls. So if you have active pups & active electronics (bass, treble, midrange controls) you need battery to operate both the pups & the eq. Passive pups have enough output to not need boosting, thus no battery needed. Best choice to me is liked passive pups and 2 or 3 band active eq. EMG low impedance pups are the most popular active pups for guitar. I dont like them as much as the regular passive EMG Hi impedance pupsthat are often paired with a EMG active 2-3 and eq for many basses. Hasnt seen any guitars with active eq's except for some high end american BC Richs.

Passive pups plus active eq is best choice imo. And is the only way to get preamp with bass & treble (and sometimes midrange) control knobs. Some with this setup also have a switch (often push/pull volume control) to turn off the active eq. Useful if battery goes out cause by bypassing the guitar functions just the same as a regular passive guitar or bass.
