Members FWAxeIbanez
I keep hearing good things about the Les Paul knock offs, how do thier SG's rate? I'm trying really hard to figure out which are the higher end models so I can look it up in the reviews, but all the japanese characters are making it hard to tell which way is up... I would imagine since it's japanese or korean made, that they would have Ibanez-y (meaning thin) necks, am I wrong? How heavy are they? the weight of an SG is half the attraction for me
Members BigFurryWhale
I played one for maybe 10 mins once. I don't recall the neck being ibanezy, it had more of heftier gibson feel to it if i remember. The SG that i played was very light in weight. Members FWAxeIbanez
what model did you play? I'm just gonna look up the highest priced one and see what features it comes with... pretty safe assumption that the flagship model is the highest price I guess... I'm just not familiar at all with thier model names
Members AbbeSauniere
I own a 80's Tokai SG. Fat neck, very '59ish. Fantastic workmanship and very resonant. Light as a feather. Lightest guitar I've ever tried, next to a Casino. I also own a LS200 from '02. Quality is still very high with Tokai's new guitars. I wouldn't hesitate if I were in the market for another new Tokai. Members hans-jürgen
The highest SG model from Tokai usually is the SG70 with mahogany neck and body and made in Japan. The neck is said to be similar to their '59 Les Paul profile, i.e. not thin at all, but I've never played one myself.

But no, most of them have a copy of the 50s LP profile Some have a slim taper, but thats still thicker than most Ibanez guitars.
Members FWAxeIbanez
wasn't supposed to be racist, it just seems like the japanese guitars all have thinner necks, I just assumed they sell better that way over there Can one be had with an ebony fretboard? i'm gonna check ebay right now but I just thought I'd ask
Members hans-jürgen
As far as I know, a SG from Tokai never had an ebony fingerboard, always rosewood. Their LS200 Love Rock has one though...

Members FWAxeIbanez
by the way, is it just the light or is there an ebony board on that 80's SG up there?

Members wietse
i own a 70's kasuga, same factory as tokai only a different name on the headstock. it's a great guitar with a nice neck not a fat gibson neck but thinner, that's oke with me because i have small hands. i love this one if the new tokai's are as good as this one go for it! Members benecol
Hello I'm just awaiting delivery of my SG70 (I'm in the UK, buying it from Ishibashi). I've had a few beautiful guitars over the last five or so years (most of the guits I've been GASsing for I've had in one shape or form) but the MIJ Tokai SGs just seem to be head and shoulders above the rest, all for one reason: the neck. It's a peach. I like a chunky neck (had a 52RI tele for a while) and you can fly around this one. MIJ Tokais in the UK tend to be pretty expensive, so I'm importing this one - I'll let you know how it is when it arrives.

I've found they generally go for five to six hundred new here in London, which i actually thought was pretty reasonable for the quality they are - especially given the price of a new Gibby Standard (not to mention the 61 reissues, which i think the Tokai is aiming for to a greater extent than the Std). Members FWAxeIbanez
oh man, I'm really interested now... I don't want a tiny tiny neck, and I don't want half a baseball bat either, this seems to be just right
