Members ArrMatey
Hi,I was wondering if any of you used the trick of the dime beater for the drums. For those of you who don't know (well I didn't till yesterday), it consists in duct taping a dime or any small coin to the face of a kick drum's inner skin and this will give a sort of metalic kick that a lot of metal bands use lately (I'm thinking of Unearth for example). My question is: do you place in the inner part of that skin so that it hits the skin and then transfers that attack to the coin on the other side or do you actually make the kick drum hit the coins? How far would you put the kick drum mic if you had to do something like that? I made a recording where I used a sennheiser e506 and it worked well but didn't know about this trick. Maybe it can help other people.
Members Kiwiburger
I would gaffer it on so the beater hits the gaffer tape, transfers to the coin, and then to the head.
Members geek_usa
I'd recommend using a quarter rather than a dime. The beater generally covers better with a quarter than a dime. Although I have to say I tried it on a Yamaha stage rock kit and it did not fair so well
