Members nightwatchman
After doing much reading and research on various tonewoods, as well as reading many posts here I thought some of you might find this page interseting regarding strats and tonewoods etc. http://www.stratcollector.com/newsdesk/archives/000204.html Excerpt: Dan Smith:
Members Gaf-Yag-A-Ton
I always liked poplar. My peavey predator (1994ish) is poplar body and sounds great. Poplar has always been steve morse's favorite wood. His signature guitar is poplar. I think I recall morse saying something like "poplar is a lighter wood. Lighter woods are more lively"--or something to that effect. The only thing I hate about "poplar" is typing it. I always type "popular" and have to hit my backspace. Members OldFenderGuy
I've always liked Poplar as well... Hard to explain, but to me you can get more "snap" in the tone than with Ash or Alder bodied guitars. The article in this thread is interesting... I had heard that Poplar was used for some Fender American Standard Stratocasters in the early 90's, but this is the first time that I've found verification.. Also interesting that James Burton requested Poplar for his Signature Telecaster, and if anyone should know about tone it would be him. I have one of the earlier Burton Tele's made from Poplar, and it has killer tone with the Texas Tele pickups.
