i think the greatest scale/theory book EVER put out,
which i learned most of my scale stuff from, but,
unfortunately out of print that i know of, is by the
old studio wizz TOMMY TEDESCO!!

it is called FOR GUITAR PLAYERS ONLY!

covers every scale you could EVER want to play.

start with this, it'll take you a long way:

basically, in that picture the "A" is your root note...so depending on what key you want to play in, use that exact formation and just move it around on the fret board.

so, if you wanted to use that scale for the key of "G", you'd make the red "A" in that picture the 3rd fret on the low E string. You would just follow the rest of the diagram's structure for the rest of the notes in the scale.
