Members BJ Bear
I am looking for some general guidance concerning the use of copyrighted music in church services (as an integral part of the service). We would not project or print lyrics/music, nor would we charge for the performance. Music would be performed by an unpaid volunteer band and not from our hymnal. Do you have any guidance for such a condition? I found a wealth of information, but nothing "on point". Any ideas?
Members nerol1st
I'm a little confused as to what is being asked here. When I attended church, I asked the music director how copywrite works with churches and it was my understanding that there was an annual license they purchased that acted as a blanket protection for most popular worship music (covered companies and the stuff they published). It covered any public performance of said music by anyone associated with the church. Even hired musicians. I have not been to church in some years though. Members chris carter
You get a blanket license from ASCAP and/or BMI (and/or SESAC). For churches I understand that the fees are very small. Just call them up and they will walk you through the process. It's very simple.
