I see that Martin makes some guitars with "Black Micarta" for the fingerboard. I also see a few basses that use "Ebonol" for their fingerboards.

Both are synthetic versions of Ebony... but are they both exactly the same stuff, with different names? Does Black Micarta = Ebonol ???

Just curious if it's the same stuff with different names. Thanks.

'Micarta' is a brand name (owned by GE) for phenolic resin impregnated laminations of paper, linen or canvas. There are a number of similar products available without the brand name, so it's hard to be definitive. The easy way to spot Micarta is at the edges, where the 'grain' lines show the laminations; the smell when grinding also gives it away.

Yeah... lots of information on phenolic resins on that site. :freak:

I don't think I've ever played a guitar with a micarta fretboard, but I wouldn't rule it out. I have many knives and gun stocks (handguns) made of micarta and G10 and I live how they look and feel. And it should certainly last a while.
