Members nuke_diver
So every once in a while the volume on my strat mysteriously drops a bit. It's happened on 2 different amps (since at first I thought it was my amp) so now I know it's the guitar. It seems to be associated with touching the pickguard. So I'm thinking it's some kind of static discharge but I don't really know if that is the case or how to address it if it was. Could it be a bad/dirty pot that is somehow interacting with the static? thanks
Members wagdog
Could be a short. Is the cavity shielded? Could be something shorting out against the ground.
Members nuke_diver
Don't think the cavity is shielded other that what would be standard for a MIM strat (if anything at all). I've had the guitar for about 4 year and it just recently started to do this and seems to be getting worse
Members docjeffrey
You're dislodging something when you press on the the pickguard? Take a look under the hood and see if you have a loose connection. Maybe one of the wires is getting pinched between the body and the pickguard? Members nuke_diver
Everything seems tight. The pickguard has never been off since I got itI know the shame of it...I just don't mod
Members figfuggo
It's not hard to do, and its worth the learning experience. But if you're really worried about doing it yourself, this sounds like something any repairman can easily remedy. Shouldn't cost you more than a minimum shop charge. It might even be free if you're still under warranty.
Members nuke_diver
Not worried about doing it myself but not sure what it could be...and I've never looked under the hood though I doubt it's that complex
Members whiteop
if the volume never completely drops to 0 it might be a bad volume potentiometer. Have replaced them before for that reason. Sometimes just contact cleaner from Radio Shack sprayed in it and working it back and forth will fix it too.
