Members Hard Truth
He would have been 100 years old this week. Besides being a fine swinging player and composer he: Had one of the first integrated bands Performed with a small group as well as with the big band-influencing the jazz to come after the big band era Had the good taste to hire players like Teddy Wilson and Lionel Hampton. and perhaps most important..he hired Charlie Christian, the father of modern electric guitar playing. Without Christian, the styles of players like BB King and T-bone Walker would not have been the same. Without King and Walker there wouldn't have been the other blues guitar kings (ie Albert, Freddie plus Buddy Guy et al) and there wouldn't have been Hendrix, Clapton, and Green creating the style of electric guitar that is still predominate today. Not to mention Christian's huge impact on jazz guitarists.

Members Billster
and perhaps most important..he hired Charlie Christian, the father of modern electric guitar playing. You know what they say about historic inevitability? The theory that if some historic figure didn't exist, some other individual would have done the same? Basically, if Christopher Columbus hadn't "discovered" North America, someone else of his generation would have - that's what was happening in Europe during that era. So (and not to discount Benny), I think that during the 1930's there was a lot integration taking place in music and entertainment, leading the way on that issue for the U.S. OTOH, who would have been Charlie Christian had Charlie not existed?
