He's just being a contrarian. It's quite childish, really. In his mind, he's saying "don't cry over spilled milk"; trying to make the point that Tom can go out and buy more. His superiority complex tells him that to acknowledge a sentimental attachment to an inanimate object is stupid, which of course, it isn't. For example: my most sentimental guitar is my first, given to me by my dad from his own personal collection. I can't express the sense of elation and pride I felt when I finished restoring it a few months ago. I'd never consider selling it, and if anything were to happen to it I would be devastated.
