Members mlabbee Posted June 5, 2013 Members Share Posted June 5, 2013 A couple of months ago, I posted on here looking for suggestions for power pop songs for a cover band project I'm working on. Well, it has come to fruitiion - we're terrible and a lot of power pop songs are much more complicated and challengin to play than you'd think (try playing "Go All The Way" . . . !), but I'm having a blast, playing a lot and really enjoying music fo rthe first time in a while.Which is now leading me to want another guitar - I'm currently playing a Rickenbacker 620 - I really like it and it fits most of the music quite well, but . . . well, you know, I'm a gear head, so I want more stuff! I think I'm set with my pedalboard and amp, so another guitar is the next logical step :-)So sticking with the power pop theme, I'm thinking an SG might be the right addition to my line up. P-90 or Humbuckers? Any other guitar I should be looking at? Strat? Tele? another Ric (like maybe a 360?) I've never really liked Les Pauls, so I'm not planning on looking at those, but tell me if that's a terrible mistake. and 335's just feel huge to me - maybe a 339? Between all the tributes, FSRs and other variations, I can't figure out what's actually available tehse days . . . Anyone try the mini e-tune? Gimic or worth it? Phil O'Keefe Posted June 5, 2013 Share Posted June 5, 2013 An SG with P90s would be a pretty good choice. You don't like 335 sized guitars or otherwise I would suggest a Casino... Think of it this way - if the Beatles ever used one, it's probaby a decent to excellent choice for power pop. That means Strats, Telecasters, various Ric and Gretsch models, Casinos, SG's - George Harrison played a Maestro equipped model in the mid 60s / Rubber Soul Revolver era (and later gave it to Pete Ham of Badfinger - the guitarist of another seminal powerpop band), but it had humbuckers... so pretty much ANY "regular" SG is probably acceptable. Members mlabbee Posted June 6, 2013 Author Members Share Posted June 6, 2013 I'm kind of leaning SG at the moment. Would P-90s be too close to the Ric Hi Gains? Unless I decide to go with a 360, I want what I get to complement my 620 - overlap is okay, but I want it to be able to be different. I used to have a Casino and it was very difernt from the Ric, but I assumed that was the hollowbody and metal covers on teh pickups.
