Members Tricyclerocks
Hi again,Happy holidays to all of you. And thhanks to everyone who has helped me in the past!Just wondering, where should you set you EQ input gains? Me specifically: Mackie 1402-VLZ Pro /out L>dbx 131 out>L QSC GX5> JBL MRX 515 out R> Rane ME30B>R QBC GX5> JBL MRX 515 Thanks so much!Mike
Members Mogwix
Set them to whatever gives you an adequate signal without clipping.

Members Unalaska
Well you've got 2 different 31 band EQ's, 1 on L 1 on R. Rane has different markings on the master vol, sometimes 0dB is 7.5 of 10, sometimes it's 12 o clock. Set it for 0 anyway and the same with the dbx. Members boomerweps
I always set mine at 0dB and eyeball the overall filters used. If the accumulated filters are in one direction or the other, I use the master gain to adjust the overall signal to 0dB. Boomerweps
Members dboomer
Set them to whatever gives you an adequate signal without clipping. And ... the noise floor doesn't bother you.
Members lifeloverwg
I use the input gain knob and the output signal lights on my DBX to match the gain to my boards main outs. Page 2 of your manual from Rane tells you how best to set theirs. Winston
Members agedhorse
Before you all get too focused on the details, you might want to confirm if the gains are input or output. Some eq's use output gain controls as make-up gain, some use input gains to prevent overload IF there is a lot of boost being used.
Members 496dart
what agedhorse said above--------in a proper world you want unity or 0 , if you have that option. gain structure..........
Members dboomer
what agedhorse said above--------in a proper world you want unity or 0 , if you have that option. gain structure.......... Andy didn't say that ... because he knows better. You only want unity IF that's the proper spot for your gain structure. It may NOT be. For example if your mixer has a max out that is X db more than your EQ's input then you would want to set the EQ lower by the difference. Otherwise you do not maintain your headroom. "Unity" is not the Holy Grail.

FWIW: Right or wrong, I've found it works well for me to insert EQ's within the board's gain structure whenever possible, rather than having the EQ's downstream of the board's outputs. However, I don't believe inserting mains and aux's on a Mackie 1402-VZL is possible.
Members Tricyclerocks
Thanks,I don't believe so either. Another question:How many (or do any) of you guys purchase a FOH 31 band eq, say a dbx 1231, if you're using a dbx Driverack PA?I'm interested in hearing your opinions.Mike
Members Bugzie
I have a 2231 on the FOH mix. Its just so much easier and faster. Basically I just use it for fine tuning after the places fill up.
Members agedhorse
I use an analog FOH eq in addition to the DSP, the DSP is set for a flat system anechoic response and then the graphic is for the room and ease of use.
