  • New. Drum. Day. Mapex MyDentity Maple 8pc.

Finally have some pics of my new babies. Seen here with the Cherry Bomb Black Panther. The Black Widow snare wont arrive for another couple of weeks. Evans Black Chrome batters, and Ebony Ambassador Resos on toms, took forever just to swap out all those heads. Ill be replacing the kick batters, just dont know with what yet.

They sound terrific, and I havent even really spent a ton of time fine tuning.

    8x7, 10x8, 12x9, 13x10, 18x16 (R), 16x16 (L), and two 22x18 kicks.
13x5.5 Cherry Snare, 14x5.5 Bronze Snare, and soon a 14x5 Maple Snare; all to rotate in and out as needed.

Since Ive quit my other bands, and Im just with City for at least another year without side work (school), I am trimming down the cymbal setup. I will keep the 14, 16, 18 A Customs; 16, 18, 22 Chinas; 14, 15 Hats; 10, 12 Splashes, and the ZilBel. I plan to add 8 and 10 inch AC or AAX splashes, and hopefully get a new ride to replace the too washy 22" A Custom, which I might just use as a crash.

Only my second acoustic kit purchase, and I am so pleased! I plan to give these sexy things plenty of action over the years, and if the honeymoon wears off and I am still as impressed, I think some Saturns will be in my future.

Do the kicks match timbrally? Is that even a concern?

Yes. The stock heads are not the best, but I dampen with a pillow in each kick; which seems to make it much easier to tune to match.

Since this is metal we are talking, boomy resonance is never my goal; I tune to get a low punch, with plenty of attack and a short sustain. When I want that epic boom that rings out, I turn to the 18" floor tom. All toms are tuned pretty well, with no additional dampening of any kind past the dual ply heads.

This Black Panther is the first snare I have ever had that I was able to tune to get just the right amount of ring without needing to use a moongel or anything to kill the batter, and that is with the single ply head. Needless to say I am VERY impressed with this drum. The hoops, snare, and strainer are just perfect!

Black Panther snare FINALLY arrived this week. Havent had a chance to bang on it at the studio yet, but I am working on getting it hooked up to my Alesis kit, if I can just figure out where the cable plugs in at... :smiley-angry006:
