Members rhymeface
Hola! I'm modding my a jazz copy I have for the first time and I'd like to replace the stock pickups. Can anyone offer suggest any suggestions on make and model? As a guideline, I don't want anything too hot and want to stay away from a stingray-esque tone as it plain doesn't sound good to me. Am open to all suggestions and reasoning. Cheers!
Moderators isaac42 Posted March 27, 2011 Moderators Share Posted March 27, 2011 I'm a big fan of the Bartolini pickups I have on one of my Rics. I don't know how Barts might sound on a Jazz, though. Similar, I'd think.
Members Jazzneck
I had passive Bartolinis (9J's) in a jazz for a while and they were definitely not hot or toppy sounding. They had a more full bottom and lower mid range and a little less high end/treble. Nice sound. Also they were dead quiet and very well made. I hope that helps. Members L-1329
Nordstrand Split Coil J's. Zero hum and just great jazz bass tone.
Members max maroon
If you want passive pu's and want a mid control (or could see yourself using it) then I'd recommend Villex pickups. They fill those 2 criteria and are, most importantly, fantastic sounding pu's.
Members engage757
Nordstrand Split Coil J's. Zero hum and just great jazz bass tone. this + 1000... I am not a bart fan at all. Lakland makes some awesome Jazz pickups, and so does, lollar.
Members Detox
DiMarzio Model Js worked out well for me. Not too hot, didn't mud the tone down.

Members misterhinkydink
For the money, Fender Custom Shop '60s Jazz Bass pickups can't be beat. But that's just like my opinion, man.
