is a cool freakin synth! Just had to vent in a positive way. It has been months since I turned this synth on as I have been caught up with other synths....but the last few nights I have been crafting a new paddish sound for a tune and this synth freaking rocks....its so unique...and for the depth, the OS is SO user friendly IMHO...a great synth and again...so unique indeed.

I sometimes hope Kawai comes out with a new version of the K5000, but i don't see how they could make it much better.

The only thing i can think of to add to it would be the ability to apply pitch envelopes to individual partials.

It seems like processors should be powerful enough to do that now?

oh yesssss. me too.

sadly, i sold my K5000W at a time when i needed the cash, and xtra space. however, im thinking one day i'd love to get K5000R. the Macro Box is superficial, as it only outputs 16 standard midi cc, as whole K5k engine can listen to midi cc, when u can get super el cheapo/ugly Behringer BCR with 32 knobs and setup presets. need 64? get two..

together w fs1r n xt, it got some of the best digital pads i've heard. but unlike these two, it can really sound warm n thick, which u don't find easily in digi world.

Mostly in terms of the time you'd spend finding your way around both of their engines.

+1 on that, Ive decided that the K5000S is the only really deep menu driven synth I want to own. Its one of those synths where you're scrolling through patches going:

"meh...meh....pretty cool....HOLY {censored}!" :D

When I can get to the point of creating a Holy Sh*t patch at will, I will be happy:)

different sound, and different texture thru and thru.

ok, not as different as, lets say, ob8 and fs1r, but still..

I don't know... It seems that the only differences between the 2 are in the frequencies: One has a higher tone(K5000), while the other more low end(FS1R), but the overall timbres sound similar to my ears... Hince my point in the 2 of them clashing... I know they have very deep synth engines, that's the obvious point :p

I mean my Virus TI could generate some of those K5000 tones as well...

Maybe my ears have forsaken me

I have K5000S & FS1r, and both are permanent members of my collection.

Deep as it is, the K5000 makes sense to me, and the OS is well designed and well laid out. However, I have not mastered it by any means. The FS1R can be confusing as hell, and I wish I had a better handle on the internal structure. Even with SoundDiver, it is very intimidating. I haven't even used the formants yet, mostly I use it for FM purposes, and it is amazing.

Aesthetically, they are both quite beautiful to behold. In this soft world, they stand proud and shiny. It's tough to find the time to dig deep into these machines. At the same time, it's kind of exciting to know that there so many things left to explore.

+1 on the K5000S. I bought one when they came out and had it for a few years, but reluctantly sold it to buy a Korg Karma. However, I recently found a used K5000R and was able to install all my old tweaked K5000S sounds from floppy disks. It's an amazing synth and I'm glad to have it back again.

As far as Kawai coming out with an updated K5000 - it's pretty unlikely. At the time they discontinued the model Kawai was working on a new model that was a 76 key version that incorporated all the realtime control features of the K5000S and all the workstation features of the K5000W. How cool would that have been? I saw some advance promo on it and spoke to a factory rep about it back then, but it never made it into production. Kawai has had some great products over the years that have been innovative and affordable, but were under-rated and overlooked by the market in favor of Roland, Korg, Yamaha, etc. I guess they've found more success in the piano market and stopped developing synths. Too bad!

How is everyone's display doing (K5000) ? I think my backlight isn't as bright as it used to be. Still pretty good and usable, but at some point, I'm gonna have to deal with it. I haven't seen Telesis mention that particular model on their website yet.

+1, it is quite surprising how warm this machine can sound seeing that its digital and all. It sometimes doesnt sound digital at all.

Displays are OK, but i've got 2 used K5000's (an 'S', and a 'W'), that must have seen some hard use. The buttons are pretty 'iffy' - sometimes they work, sometimes not. But when I'm tempted to really lay into them, I don't, because i've taken the S model apart once already, cleaned it up some, and it helped a bit, but it's still not up to par.

I've got an old pc version of soundiver that i use to edit them tho.

Hmmm... Perhaps some other company could buy the intellectual property from Kawai and continue to develop the technology. Sounds like there's money to be made...

If only they made them like that still.

+1!!!!!! FULL WIDTH white keys, and textured black keys. It's a pleasure to play.

Someone mentioned the backlight. I've had mine for almost 10 years now and it's still going strong, haven't noticed a change honestly.
