I did a comparison of the vst version of the Ensoniq ESQ/SQ from Butchy's site and I have to admit, it nails down the essense of the hardware analog version.

It's one of the most authentic software representations of a hardware analog that I've heard!!!

Download it now.

That's quite a lot of fun for a freebie! :) I may even end up using that for something, and it's made me want to have a bash on the original :D

Quite a lot more DX-like than I imagined... interesting.

Positive

Bang for the buck: 10/10 (it's free!!!)

Can emulate most sounds that don't require much of filter processing (see below).

Great introduction for anyone interested in ESQ-1 / SQ-80 series.

Negative

Filter is... hmm... well it doesn't sound near real analog Curtis filter in SQ-80. BTW, the same CEM3379 was used in SCI Prophet VS, that's why they sound similar.

Saturation/distortion waveform feature is far from original.

Also like the Prophet VS, the real SQ-80 has no anti aliasing filters for the waveforms and some dirty aliasing can be made on real SQ-80. I can't hear that type of aliasing in software version.

Filter resonance in software version is its weakest point.

Great software on its own! Hats off to the author. As of real SQ-80, well it is probably impossible to fully emulate it because of its 8 bit engine / waveforms, raw non aliased signal path, waveform distortion, and all that run through an analog Curtis filter.
