I saw someone mention on here that he had successfully been able to control an MKS-80 with a Novation Remote SL. That's excactly what I'm trying to do with no luck. I can't find the sysex codes anywhere. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Are you sure the Novation SL even supports sysex? If so, look up the function in the manual. If there are no pre-made templates for MKS-80 you'll have to roll your own, which means you need to know the sysex strings for each parameter on the MKS, which you can get by downloading the manual for that synth, or by obtaining a PC editor for it, and study the MIDI stream from that. If the Novation supports MIDI LEARN, then you don't need to know the codes yourself, you can just have the Novation 'learn' from the output of the PC-based editor. That 2nd method is how I programmed a Kentron Control Freak to work with a DW8000.

I made these the day I got my ReMote SL, and it does work fairly well. Feel free to use them to learn and modify accordingly. If you don't understand sysex, making these really are a PITA...here ya go:

My homemade MKS-80 ReMote SL Templates

A scanned copy of the manual with the sysex specs is there also for reference...

Installation and Usage instructions are as follows:

Right-click each template (in .syx format) and "Save As" somewhere on your computer.

Load the Roland - MKS-80(U).syx template into a free slot in the ReMOTE. Make sure to save that template in memory...

Load the Roland - MKS-80(L).syx template into the very next slot in the ReMOTE. This is a "linked template" and must be right next to it in the ReMOTE's memory. Again, save the template.

The MKS-80 must be set to MIDI Channel 1 for this to work. Not sure if the ReMOTE can be programmed to use a variable in the string for the MIDI channel of the board, so this one is hard-coded to channel 1 for now.

Start off using the first (Upper) template. That template works for all single tone patches (at least that I have tested so far). When you have a patch that uses both tones, you can switch to the lower tone by using the row selector buttons next to each row of controls and it will grab those controller values from the next template in memory without you having to manually reload that template. If you look in the lower left-hand corner of the left-side LCD strip you will see a "1" or a "2" telling you which of the template group layers you are currently on. I think there is a bug/design shortcoming in the ReMOTE OS because this "1" or "2" only shows up on the left-side LCD even though both sides are switched to the next layer. Screw around with it and you'll see what I mean...hopefully they will add the group layer label to the other LCD strip as well.

Thanks, and let me know how you like it!

Umbra - no, the sysex strings for the MKS-80 are considerably longer than 1 byte...and they do work from the Remote SL. I also made a MKS-80 template for the original Remote 25, which I have sitting in a box in the basement which works as well (just not enough LCD space to be efficient at programming the MKS). I was originally worried about the string length when trying this, as I was moving from a Peavey 1600x which had something like 80-byte sysex string limits. Without looking in the manual I think the ReMote supports up to 14-byte strings, but regardless it is certainly enough for the MKS-80 tone spec.

You can install the Remote Librarian and load the templates I have linked here if you want to look closer at them...I don't think you have to have an actual ReMote keyboard plugged in to run the software.

Thanks!

Thanks, you guys are great. And thanks dugman for the ReMote SL templates. I'm having some trouble getting them to work though. I assume to get them into the SL I have to open them with the ReMOTEEditor and then export them to the controller.

I can't get them to open in the editor though. I keep getting a message saying "unable to open template, the file is not a valid template file." Could it be a Mac/PC issue? I'm on a Mac powerbook.
