P140 or CP300?

Hello, new to the forum. I'm a classically trained piano hobbyist, played acoustic pianos (Kawai upright and a Yamaha baby grand) since 8... I just graduated from college and will likely not have a very permanent address for a decade, so was looking at portable/moveable digital pianos (something moveable by me and my gf, but does not have to have gigging portability).

I've currently narrowed down my choice to the Yamaha P140 and CP300. The P140 has somewhat weaker speakers, but the CP300 is also a $1000 more. For CP300's $2100, I could buy myself a ThinkPad in addition to a P140. I don't really need CP300's hundreds of voices and modulation capablity, though having these extra features might also change my playing style and expose myself to the world of keyboard playing (which I'm welcome to).

I tried them out a little at GC, but haven't been able to really listen to what I was playing as there were a lot of other people around banging on other instruments. So my question is, solely for the Grand Piano voices and action (and taking into account only the built-in speakers), is the CP300 worth $1000 more than the P140? Is the CP300 built better? Any differences between the two on headphones? Which will last me close to a decade until I buy myself a nice grand piano?

Are there other portable pianos between $1200-2400 that I should consider?

Thanks a bunch!

Hi,

If you're planning on having this board for a decade, then go CP300.

CP300 has better action, effects (string resonance, etc) than the P140.

The speakers are better, and when used give a nice vibration which makes the playing that much more enjoyable.

If you have the funds, get the CP300. If not, I'd suggest CP33 if you don't need speakers, or P140 if you do.

I own a CP300.

If those are the only choices, AVOID the P140. It lacks 1/4" outputs (only RCA jacks) and that's only going to be a pain in the arse in the long run.

While the action on the CP300 is not noticably better than the P140, the sounds are. For the extra money there's a huge leap up in overall sound quality and this is improved further by having decent speakers. The P140 is a nice instrument, but has a couple of serious flaws which really spoil it.

If you settle on the P140, you'll always be wondering whether you should've just splurged on the CP300 ;) If you start off with the best it's unlikely you'll end up regretting it.
