Members anony
Do you feel it makes any difference to record MIDI through a USB, PCI or firewire interface? An article I read indicates USB to be a few milliseconds slower, but the author expressed doubt that it would be noticeable in practice. Also there doesn't seem to be many PCI interfaces with multiple MIDI IOs at this point. I've been using a MIDI-to-USB adaptor which I've been told is the least desirable setup. Members ElectricPuppy
You won't notice the difference, if any.
Members P321
DEPENDS. You wouldn't notice an increase of 2 or 3ms VS PCI, but several USB MIDI interfaces are actually worse than that, and there you might well notice. You also have to remember jitter, which can easily be 3ms or worse via USB. So you may indeed notice sloppier USB timing depending on the device and drivers, particularly if the playing is fast. Remember that MIDI latency has to be added to audio latency if triggering VST's, so it could increase the time between striking a key and hearing a sound from 10 to maybe 15ms, and there you might well "feel" the difference when playing. Most people find USB acceptable, but if you want the tightest timing go with PCI.
Members anony
Makes sense, thanks. Can anyone recommend some PCI interface cards? I know of M-Audio's 2496 and 192 on the lower end and RME's HDSP cards on the higher end.
Members Khazul
You will probably notice more difference between a good usb midi hardware+driver combo and a bad usb midi hardware+driver combo than you're likely to notice through difference interface types.
