Hi I need a synthesizer/ keyboard for college. I want to mainly use it as a piano but i may want to use it as a synthesizer to create some music. Anyway, my budget is around 1,000 US dollars. Is there any recommended keyboards that act as both synthesizers and as a piano/keyboard? Thanks in advance!

If you are mainly using the synth for piano, I'd consider looking for one with 88 keys and weighted.

I'm a bit out of touch with synthy prices (esp. in us dollars), but in any case I've had a Korg N1 for 10 years now which I play pretty hard and gig with and its still happy. Its got a decent piano/pad/organ range of stuffs - but for the really fun things I use it as a midi controller along with nord micro modular. If you're using the thing with a computer in any case maybe its worth getting just an 88note weighted controller and running soft synths? (personally I like hardware for portability and reliability though)

Also, is it a synthesizer? I want to be able to connect the keyboard to the computer and use it with a program like FL Studio.

Thanks!

You can do that with any keyboard which had MIDI ports. Kawai has it, so yes, you can control all your softsynths with it.

I would also suggest that to avoid hand strain etc you buy a cheap controller as well and midi it up to your controller that way you get synth action keys also. I would also second the kawai recommendation they are a good solid board great feeling keys and a great soundset for the money

Fusion 8HD. It's got a good piano sound, 88 keys, it's got a sampler with a 40Gb hard drive, and it's also a synthesizer (a real one, not just one with synthesizer samples). And you'll have money left to buy a good interface to your computer or some good plug-ins for effects if you need that.

They've been discontinued so you'll have to find a used one, but they are not hard to find, even new and with a warranty. But they are cheap because they are no longer being produced and the stores are selling their last units.

thanks for all the help!

I was just curious before i bought tho.

I'm going to leave it in my college dorm bc im moving in in a month so i dont it can be too big. Also, isn't the Kawai mp5 better than the mp4? And my friend recommended the Roland FP4. Is that also something to consider?

Thanks in advance!! =D
