the bass player in my band has convinced himself that in order for a song to be "heavy" you need "fatty breakdowns"

one or two is ok once in awhile. but this crazy mother {censored}er is trying to put 3in one song! the rest of us are trying to think of something to show him or tell him to divert this crazy mind set of his.

any suggestions?

Maybe he is listening too much to August Burns Red? Those {censored}ers have about 15 breakdowns in each song. :S

haha, so so true...:thu: yeah. breakdowns are good, but only to a certain extent. "heavy" has varying definitions from person to person. at least thats my experience. but I dont cant think of any good alternatives other than just trying to take unnecessary ones out.

I'd say it depends on how long the song is... how much is going on... how many changeups, what kind of transitions you need... any other bridges there are, etc. Some songs... gasp... may not even require a breakdown.

Each song, it seems to me, wants to be different but so often we feel obliged by convention or considerations extrinsic to the song or its music to put in seemingly de rigeur, often faddish elements.

I'm reminded of a dark era when every band, whether they were rock or disco, seemed to think it need roto toms fills and syndrum accents... keeripes...
