Filling a tremolo cavity - Testing a theory...

I have a basswood project body that used to have a tremolo. I have no desire to refit another one (...personal preference...just too old to whammy anymore...) and was toying with exactly how to fill the void.

I plan on filling the vertical hole tightly, probably with alder...but was wondering about leaving a gap in the back routing between another alder cover piece and the existing body.

This would essentially create a small sound chamber within the body. This "soundboard" back plate would be fitted to the vertical alder piece under the theory it will help transfer the resonance from the bridge into the sound chamber.

Any comments, suggestions or warnings would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Scott

Here's a thread on a similar (but not quite the same) subject.

Here's another forum that discusses the subject, a little more directly.

I read in the Guitar Player mag, about 3 years ago, that a player had filled-in a tremolo cavity (Floyd Rose) with bowling-ball material. I think that player was Johnny Hilland, but I can't swear to it. They had a picture of the black material in the guitar's body.

Good luck!
