Which hi hats for me?

You should get some that sound good to you. You might actually hate the sound of another drummer's favorite hats.

Generally though, the higher end hats produced by Zildjian, Paiste, and Sabian usually sound the best to most players. That's a broad statement but that's all I can really offer. Also, your tastes might change later down the road and you'll want something more complex/less complex sounding in a year or so.

Yep, go to the store and hit all of em in as many different ways as possible. Open, closed, in between, tip of the stick, side of the stick, etc. and buy the one that appeals to you. I wouldn't look at brand or prices until you narrow it down to 3 or 4 that you really like, and then you can assess it from there.

Personally, I like Sabian AAX hats and Zildjain K hats, but there are several varieties within each of those makes...there are a ton of options, explore as many as possible and buy the hats that make you go :).

For Zildjian, I've played the master beat, new beat and quick beat hi-hat sets. They're all great, and I think you can find the quick beats for pretty cheap used these days. They sound better used anyway.

I recently bought the master sound beat or whatever they're called, and I love them. A little more expensive, but not exorbitantly so. They sizzle really nice and have a great range of volume. I tried the 13"s tho and there wasn't enough juice behind them for rock/punk playing. They'd probably be really good for jazz.

Also, the Sabian Peart hi-hats are worth looking at, but they seemed a little too dry for what I was playing, so the Master sounds fit the bill nicely.

Well yeah, it's hard to know what you want when you just get started. Explain your situation to a salesperson at the store and they might even demo what hats they have for you. If they are worth a poop, they'll even point out the characteristics of the hats to help give you an informed decision.

Go to www.sabian.com to hear some samples. This might help give you an idea what type of hat makes what type of sound.

Zildjian ZXTs are imbetween budget and high end cymbals. If you just pick up a ZXT Pro weight package, you should be very happy with it starting out, regardless of your style of music. They'll hold up too, even if you pound the things like mad, and that is a plus.

Actually, a lot of higher end cymbals might sound worse to you, because they are often very specialized and aren't meant to be really versatile.

Definitely go out and play as many as you can at a store, though.

Like rumblebelly said........Paiste,Zildjian and Sabian are the top 3 for hats in a decent range. all 3 manufacturers middle to top line hats are SUPERB.................if you want a great sound... well, your gonna have to pay for it....were talking in the $2-300 range for a set of hats.

I use a set of Paiste Innovation medium hats(14")and i swear by them.......PS don't forget the 13" hats sound awesome as well.

I have a virtually new set of Zildjian ZXT Pro 14" hats 20" ride and 16" crash that I don't use anymore but I guess you're not in the UK so they won't be much good to you, being the good Christian girl that I am I think I'm going to give them to a deserving cymbal-less person over here:)

You should buy them both I think and pay double the price for each pair cause you are getting a tad annoying. Do you do a lot of drugs?

Yes, you can use them both for more than one type of music.

I'd suggest going to Paiste's, Zildjian's, and Sabian's websites and do a little research and see what intrigues you. I know there's soundbytes on Sabian's site and from there you can get a good idea what a medium weight cymbals sounds like versus a heavy cymbal. Or what the difference is between a 13" hat versus a 14" hat, soundwise.

This best thing you can do for yourself is go to a store that has a decent selection of cymbals and beat on everything. Make sure you ask lot's of questions while you are there.

I use 14" Avedi New Beats in a brilliant finish.

For rock these hats kick ass.....

They are bright and cut though like a mad man.

I used to play a combo of New Beats on top and Quick Beats on the bottom.... it was a little darker and didnt wash out like totally open New Beats do......

Actually the New Beat/Quick Beat combo is more pleasing to my ear while playing but listening to my bass player play my kit from out in the audience all miced up the full New Beats sounded better...... Kind like how I prefer the sound of pinstripe heads with a lot of extra muffling while playing
