Members rockbeat
I'm thinking about adding a 14" floor tom to my standard sized kit. Is this a stupid idea? I mean, would it just not be practical to have tom sizes of 12", 13" and 14" (along with the 16" floor, of course)? I know some people, especially nowadays, even argue the validity or usefulness of standard size toms all together. I've never had a problem with getting good pitch and tone intervals between my 12" and 13" toms. I'm just wanting some outside opinions on this. Members TimeKeeper310
yup....i'm using 12-13, mounted..and 16 floor considering the same...adding 14 floor...even perhaps, eliminating the 13?....still pondering the idea......but, if i add the 14, i'm afraid then, i'd want a

I love it! You don't even need the 13" tom with that set-up. And it looks damn cool!

Members Thingfish
Most people add a 10 to a standard set-up or add a 16 to a fusion set-up.
Members rockbeat
Given my druthers I would add an 18. I know that's the usual add-on floor tom for a standard 5 pc. The thing is, I found a Mapex 14" floor tom in the same finish as my kit, a finish that Mapex no longer offers. I've decided to go ahead and get it. Thanks for the responses everyone. I now have that same drum shop scouring the universe for a matching 10" tom as well.
Members backtodrum
Another consideration is the 13' inch tom is much shallower than a 14" inch floor tom. As others have stated you will still get a greater boom (more bottom end) out of a 14 " floor tom. I think it would compliment your kit nicely. Members Rizzle
it just really depends on what you like. . . the 14" is gonna add some lower end to the set, and you still get that tonal difference from the 13". I would take out the 13" and stick w/ the 12,14,16 like a Chad Smith set up, but i like more low end in my set:thu:

Im racking them up an a Pearl Icon rack system. I cant say enough about how freeing I find the rack. Pearl, Gibralter, doesnt matter. I would recommend any rack to anyone whose got more than 2 toms. I can't see me taking the 13" out of the mix, at least not on a permanent basis. I can't stand to see a perfectly good drum sit and collect dust just because of it's size. It can't help it if it's a 13" tom, it was born that way.
Members coyote-1
I have a 14" mounted tom. Sounds great; aurally it fits perfectly between the 13 and 16. Of course it is Yamaha Stage Custom, so the mounted toms are slightly deeper than some other brands. I also have a 12 and 10. It's a nice range - practicality?? Who cares??? You could: > take a head off and use it as a stick bucket > it would make a perfect metronome stand > mount it to the left of your Hi-Hat > go for the new Bruford setup
