hello, i have a set of evans clear heads that have a metal ring around the outside to improve attack and low end. i play a tama rockstar which i bought used with these heads. now, the shells themself are loud. 8 ply and i forget the wood. its a hard wood. i need some quieter heads. i play jazz and hate how these things sound like a gunshot going off. are jazz heads, i think they call them, softer to hit. thank you very much. have a good day.:thu: i hate to tape stuff up. i rather let the drums speak so to speak.

Most jazz guys--those who are not using fiberskins--use coated Ambassadors over clear Ambassadors or Diplomats. It's about as standard a setup as there is. Many folks use them for other kinds of music, too, even rock guys.

This combination will actually play louder than double-ply heads, but still have nice tone at softer volumes. Of course, you have to HIT them softer to get that . . . :D

you used a lot of words that went over my head. i should say i try to hit hard and need some softer sounding less db. heads. im sure you understood that tough. im going deaf from an explosion accident. my paiste 302s kill my ears even with custome plugs and outer ear muff type protection. i may just give up and stick to strings.

I'm not a hard hitter but I do use commercial grade headphones to block the sound when I practice. My headphones are intended for metal work such as grinding so they do a good job saving my ears. Most drums are loud, especially inside a small room like a bedroom. Not trying to be adowner but it may not get any softer withotu using a softer stick like a hot rod.

Elephant, maybe you got confused on some of these names: Ambassadors are a type of drumhead made by company Remo. Fiberskins and Diplomats are other drumheads made by Remo as well. When he says "coated Ambassadors over clear ambassadors" he is saying that one side of the drum (the side that you strike with your stick, known as the batter head) will have an Ambassador head with a Coated (white) finish on it, and the other side of the drum (you don't hit this one, called the Resonant side) has an Ambassador head with a clear finish.

Here's a Coated Ambassador: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Remo-Weather-King-Ambassador-Coated-Batter?sku=442106

And a Clear Ambassador (note that it looks white because the background is white): http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Remo-Weather-King-Ambassador-Clear-Batter?sku=442206

Fiberskyn head(s): http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Remo-FiberSkyn-3-Medium-Batter-Head?sku=442402

I hope that helps you; if the stuff I wrote was too basic for you, please feel free to throw something at me.
