Got to see JoJo Mayer

I am watching Jojo's bad ass dvd right now. He and I both use the matched German grip. The part I like is that he basically touts the matched grip over traditional for many reasons. He says you can achieve the sound you want with the technique that suits you, and the traditional (asymmetrical) grip really isn't superior or necessary. He admits it's an emotional debate. But everything he does is based on the matched grip, and I'd say he can play pretty much anything he wants that way.

There should never be another traditional vs matched argument...just use what works for you personally.

Thank you Jojo!!!! :D

awesome, I'm going to see him this coming saturday in kansas city. Can't wait. curious to what you paid? This one is 9 dollars in advance and 11 at the door.

$12adv -15door.

Bring a pacifier, as he got into talking about breakbeats and then playing them - a little too much for my tastes. I got the point pretty quick.

He also played along to some of his music - I guess it will be on the Nerve CD that will eventually come out soon (he talked about it in the Q and A).

I got the most out of the Q and A ... someone brought up about making a career in the session business, and he had some interesting observations.

The guy is awesome. I don't see anything that he can't do. Double pedals?!! He don't need no steenking double pedals!

I'd suggest trying to get a seat towards his left so that you can see his footwork. He's a righty with usually a one up/one down setup, so there were more cymbals on that side blocking a good view of his hands. He had two floor toms for this gig, though (the Sonor kit was supplied by a local drumshop). If you sit to his left, you can also see his hands better.

Jojo displays a goofy sense of humor in his dvd, and I have only seen the first couple of chapters, up to stick bounce.

I like his approach, and he has some extra tracks with performances and some killer beats.

I read his article in MD a few months ago. I really like that he said the future of drumming is layering the music, as opposed to playing figures harder than what Vinnie C. has already done. He's a great player and I enjoy the bass and drums thing he does. There are cuts on the DVD of him playing around the streets of N.Y. by himself that are very cool just playing a jungle kit!!

What an awesome clinic! I even got a free remo putty pad worth $7, for a $11 door charge to see one of the most technical and inspiring drummers was a steal. I sat only two rows from the stage so I took some pretty decent pics. I'll post them later on today. I would of shot some video but the Sabian rep caught the guy in front of me and asked him to stop. I talked to him about the cd and he said there was something messed up with the distribution and then he basically went on to say that the record companies in general were mostly f*cked up. He promised to release it online if they weren't going to work with him in a couple months.

Got my dvd in the mail the other day......a must get.....there is alot of good stuff on this.

It's great, I have watched it all now.

Points he made:

- Traditional (asymmetrical grip) is not necessary, he calls the German (symmetrical or matched) grip the most logical, but for people to use what works for them. In fact, switching between them.

- Proper grip, no matter what style is used

- Proper use of Moeller technique

- Methods of developing certain rudiments and combinations at speed

- Economy of movement/conservation of energy

- One handed rolls

- Development of flexibility and endurance

And he does some very cool beats/performances.

Raising the dead a little, this is the most recent thread specifically for Jojo Mayer so I went with it.

I finally sat down and watched roughly half of the second dvd in the Secret Weapons set. I've had this set for a few months and just never got around to giving it proper attention - I didn't watch the first because my none of my dvd players want to play it, so I'll have to slap it in the computer sometime soon.

Very interesting info though, I know alot of people here praise these dvds and I can see why.
