Girl vocalist, 2nd night...

Last weekend (16th) we had a girl come out and try out with us. We liked what we heard (more importantly) than what we saw, so we asked her to come out again. Last night was that "again"

She did pretty good - has this odd ability to sing not only the actual pitch, but to shift it to a pitch that harmonizes perfectly with that pitch. Kind of like when a power chord is played, she can sing that secondary note perfectly. Her style is quite a shift as well from us - more "hippie-esk", but, she's damn near fearless.

The only concern we have is that she's pushing 90's material, and we want to do mostly 70's, some 80's, with some 90's/today, and, go more bluesy.

The other side of things is that we've been kicking around the idea of going as a power-trio since last Wednesday, when we tried our bass player in a more vocalist role. He's been lead vocals on a couple songs, but not all of them - and even he was surprised by what he could do...so we feel we have that in our back-pocket, should the girl not work out.

All that said, I'm thinking I may try to promote the idea that we continue with "the plan" as a 3-piece, while also having a second "band" including the girl, and doing more material that she's interested in. Last night, we learned 95% of Sex Type Thing (STP), and she did vocals for it - and it sounded pretty cool.

sounds awesome man. girl vocalists are cool, especially when youre used to a guy its a nice change.

right now im looking for a girl who can play sax and sing for my jazz combo. right now its me, a bassist, and a pianist and id love to have a girl who could play sax on some songs and sing for others.

Lady vocals on Sex Type Thing would be interesting. I'm having a hard time imagining it.

We also do Young Lust (Pink Floyd) - she did good on that too. We're thinking of changing the lyrics slightly to make it more "correct"...

She's also happy using her gender to put twists on songs...

We're used to a guy who can't sing, but could scream and grumble, and overprocessed his vocals because he couldn't stay on key/pitch.

So...yeah, having this chick...good thing...

And she's hot too... - I have to remind myself "I'm the drummer, not a spectator"

The only things we have to work with her on is mic control - she's pretty dynamic with her volume, but, doesn't pull her mic away when she gets on it...

We played Argent's "Hold your Head Up" - and during the chorus she was doing this half-moan, half sing thing between the lines that was just toppers...lol...granted, it's there in the original, but she added some extra "mojo" to it...lol

I think Candy Dulfer already has her own band.

We tried a chick singer before...and she too was a hottie. I had the perfect view from behind my kit. Distracting at times.

So the two songs you mention have Sex and Lust...subtle hints?

Hey, I mentioned Hold Your Head Up by Argent.

We also did Head Like a Hole (NIN), White Wedding, quite a few.

She's doing really good, even if she's "off" because of format issues. We changed our songs to help out our last vocalist, dropping parts, moving them, etc. We're having to go back and relearn some too...

Yeah see... we make it known right away to anybody that's going to audition with us that we are already playing what we want to play, and are playing it how we want to play it. Their job is to fit in with the rest of the group. They're welcome to bring a few songs to the table, as long as they are within those parameters.

We've parted ways with a couple people after about an hour of playing over this stuff. We do 60's and 70's material, with about half being blues and half classic rock fare. We've had people come in under those pretenses and after three songs start trying to push country on us, or a lot of brand new stuff.

Yeah, the only thing is that it's partially my fault as well. She wanted a list of songs with everyone in the room, and I can rattle off 50 songs from the 90's I'd love to do, but don't fit within the band, so the ones she wrote down were a bit more heavily loaded with 90's than what we intend to play.

There's clearly some musical attraction there - sounds like she can rock - so try it out. I mean, you're not marrying the gal! :)

So, jam a few times and see how it goes - haven't you ever heard of "try before you buy?!" :thu:

having a hot singer helps out a lot. When i went to see the scorpions, the opening band had a ridiculously attractive female singer. If it weren't for her, then I wouldn't have noticed the band at all.

She REALLY got everyone's attention when she teased us about taking her top off.

Be careful. ..I've been married to my chick lead singer for 18 years this past Sunday. (8/24/08).

I'd had the band going for a few years w/ my brother-in-law... wife and i'd been married for 6 or so years when she asked to come to a rehearsal to hang out. "Sure, Baby, anything you want. . come on out." She asked to sing a song (I, at that time, had no clue that she could sing. . she wouldn't ever sing for me... her friends and family kept telling me she had a great voice, but she'd never sing for me).

So we did The Weight, and split the verses. ..Devin on 1st, Dawnie on 2nd, Devin on 3rd, me on 4th. Like they do it in "the Last Waltz". Got to her verse, Dawnie opens her mouth and out pours this golden husky silky tone that knocked me the {censored} out... (think gladys knight w/ a hint of aretha). . . i'm sitting there, stunned.. .stopped playing entirely just to listen. ..we all stopped. . . and i look at her. ..

"what ELSE do I not know about you?!!?!!? After six years of marriage you let me know you can sing like this NOW?!!!??. . .Hell, Honey. . you're hired"
