yeah, so ... auditioned against a handful last monday. got the call tuesday they wanted me to play with em.

then the next day, i got a call from the guit player.

"hey man, how many rehearsals you think you need to learn the songs?"

"ummm ... i dunno, prolly just 2 or 3 i'd guess. it ain't like it's rush."

"great! so you can do the show on the 26th?"

"that's like ... a week away. SURE!"

ha.

great band, great musicians, VERY focused on being tight. been listening to their CD religiously for days. got rehearsal tuesday and thursday to nail {censored} down then my debut with 'em next friday. good ol fun-as-hell honky tonk, so it's mostly just keepin {censored} together. shouldn't be a problem.

i'm stoked. and kinda wanna new cymbal setup for the gig. :)

Nice! Sounds like fun man. So how many tunes do ya have to learn?

11. but they're all pretty similar. the only challenge is they throw a lot of stops in. so if i can just get those in my head, i can get by alright till we get more time to work 'em out more.

i'm stoked! never actually gigged this style.

howdy yall.

so, the gig came and went after the two rehearsals. i missed ONE stop (this band does A LOT of stops) ... but i blame the bass player; cuz she was supposed to kinda signal me for them just to help out. but her defense after the show was "it was souding so great, i forgot we hadn't been playing together for years!" :)

got many, many compliments afterwards, several attendees that knew this was my first show were like "man, i dunno how you got all that after just TWO rehearsals!" and others were like "sounded great; how long you been playing with these guys?" "oh ... about a week now." " ... holy {censored}."

it also turned out i was slightly mistaken - as this was not, technically, a permanent gig at the time. turns out it was a trial by fire. because saturday afternoon, while having brunch with my fiance, i got a call from the guitar player offering me the gig permanently!

and, of course, i accepted. these guys are just too fun to play with! so now, there's gonna be a flurry of shows gettin booked.

which leads me to a problem ... my kit is NOT right for this gig. it's a sorta down-n-dirty, honky tonk band with an element of jazz. (the guitar player is a huge les paul fan.)

my kit is a custom built ayotte from 1999 - i had it built with extra deep shells for more loudness. my cymbals are all bigass paiste rudes - 18/20 crashes and heavy 14" hats. my ride is my beloved paiste sig dry-heavy 22" - which i've had for prolly 13 or 14 years at this point and will never use anything else.

every gig i've ever had has been some type of hard rock/metal, which is why my kit is built to be loud. this gig, however, does not require this.

so - time to research new gear! woo hoo!

Didn't they like what you had to offer? Hell if it sounded good stick with what works, why change a good thing?

besides no one in the crowd is going to say, hey, isn't that a custom built ayotte... but made made for a rock band?

oh, it has nothing to do with the crowd. it's for my own peace of mind. and there were some comments made alluding to being too loud by the singer. and a good friend that attended told me the only negative thing he could say is my drums were almost overpowering; and i certainly wasn't playing hard.

i probably could get away with just new cymbals; but that kit in particular, i kind of have an emotional connection to - my father was killed in an automobile accident; i used some of the money i got from the settlement to buy that kit; so i kind of consider it the last thing dad got for me. i played it out for years and years and it's taken a hell of a beating. then i didn't really play much for a couple years ... and now, i just don't know if i wanna keep subjecting it to being drug in and out of clubs; getting knocked into and knocked over, etc. keep it safely cased for recording purposes and have more of a road warrior kit to haul around.

Congrats on the show and the new gig!

As an owner of multiple kits, I say go for it, provided you've got the spare funds (weddings/honeymoons are expensive  ). It's never bad to have a gig kit that you don't mind getting used/abused and you'll never have to regret having used your Ayotte kit one gig too many.
