Members Kabaalk
Sleepless/Curious: When you took drum lessons, were you shown how to keep time on the ride or hi-hats first? It recently occurred to me (5 minutes ago) that I have (and had) no idea why I was taught to play the hats before the ride, since the crossover could be confusing. I believe that this nigh-insignificant first-step has colored my playing on a subconscious level. Maybe I should sleep more.
Members zildjian@consol
Hats, but the 2nd or 3rd week both, also encouraged to change to quarter notes as well as 8th notes, in time of course
Members faileddrummer
I was never taught to ride the ride. I taught myself most of what I know (very little) and it shows in my playing. I need some money so I can take some lessons!
Members marko46
Self taught, other than jr. high band, snare only. But I would guess I taught myself on the hats 1st. At 4, the hats are easier to reach. Crossover being harder never would have occured to me. But I would also guess, you'll find hats to be the #1 answer. That is almost a natural crossover IMO. Members JMR
I never really took lessons. the first guy I took lessons with my mom didn't like and frankly he wasn't fun to learn from. He didn't seem to know how to teach the stuff I wanted to learn. two or three years later, my old school's band director (who left the next year) taught me a lot about using your wrists and dynamics. She's a prodigy, very, very talented. She didn't know much about set drums. I've mostly taught myself, learned from watching other people play mostly. Members danrothmusic
My teacher had me using the hats first. I think it's because he had me putting the hat on 2 and 4 with my foot almost as soon as he switched me seriously to the ride.Though I had figured out earlier that you can ride the ride for a different sound
