Members bluesfella
So many rockers do it and it sounds awesome, but how do they do it? I can do it for a while but that way I ruin my voice. I can tell I'm doing {censored} wrong. What's like the basic idea behind it? Like this:[video=youtube;v5eSvCADH7Y] How does this guy do this night after night without {censored}ing himself up?
Members Masklin
Staticsound has posted a video or two about this, I think. As far as I can tell, it's just vocal fry on top of high-volume singing.

Members Consume
Not if done correctly. Check out the scream in this at 3:10. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lf9OnQDhlZA Eric Adams from Manowar has been doing this for 30 years, and his speaking voice is perfectly clear - he actually performs in Broadway plays when Manowar isn't touring. He's been in Phantom (of the Opera) and Cats, and has performed a duet with Sarah Brightman called "Where Eagles Fly".http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GK9h8oKkN4g Another one that comes to mind is David Draiman from Disturbed. He sings with tons of grit, but his speaking voice is perfectly clear. Some people, like Rod Stewart and Brian Johnson have mis-aligned vocal cords, so that there is a rubbing of the vocal cords when they speak or sing. If you hear somebody speak with a grit to their voice they have damaged their vocal cords in some manner - it could be from yelling, screaming, smoking, using cocaine...there are tons of things that can cause it. Members MikeyParent
Yeah this is my main singing style - if my voice is otherwise fine, I can sing like this all night long without hurting myself - unless I push it too hard. Another one that comes to mind is David Draiman from Disturbed. He sings with tons of grit, but his speaking voice is perfectly clear. Sidenote: Saw him live and he is the real deal. Awesome singer. Members FmxPaul
It's exactly like he said. Even though you're using (as he calls it) the muffler sound, you really aren't pushing a ton of air and it certainly isn't across your vocal chords. If you take that "muffler" sound and you don't have enough PA volume, you will ultimately start to raise your own volume & end up taking that "roof of the mouth" grit/gravel sound and unknowingly migrate back down into the throat and end up hoarse for a week, so be careful & let the PA do the work. I've been singing "high & Dirty" for decades and I still have a real decent clean & mid sound to my voice. Actually, I prefer the clean, but some songs- You need to make them have a bit of kick. He's a decent coach & informative. Thanks & Be careful
Members ToneGrail
I can't imagine the damage that Brian Johnson from AC/DC has done to his voice over the years. It's pretty evident in their more recent live videos.
Members Masklin
Brian has indeed torn his voice to pieces. Worth it.
